What is Family Constellation?

Family Constellation is a systemic, experiential approach associated with Bert Hellinger. In a facilitated session, a person may explore how family relationships, roles, significant losses, exclusions or long-standing expectations are experienced in the present. The aim is not to assign blame or find one explanation for every difficulty. Instead, the process offers a structured opportunity to notice relationship patterns, reflect on family context and consider new ways of relating.

What is Family Constellation?

  • You notice repeating relationship patterns

You return to familiar dynamics such as over-responsibility, distance, conflict or difficulty expressing needs.

  • Family roles feel heavy

You feel responsible for keeping the peace, caring for everyone or meeting expectations at the expense of your own needs.

  • You want to understand your place in the family

You are reflecting on belonging, boundaries, parent-child roles, sibling relationships or major family changes.

  • You are at a life transition

A relationship change, grief, marriage, separation or another transition has brought new questions about your connections and choices.

What a session may look like

01

Begin with your question

Clarify what you would like to explore and what would make the session useful.

Explore the system

Depending on the format, the facilitator may use representatives or objects, markers and spatial arrangements.

02

Notice what emerges

Reflect on feelings and perspectives without being pressured to accept any interpretation as fact.

03

Integrate gently

Close with time to consider what feels relevant and identify a grounded next step, if appropriate.

04

A thoughtful, consent-led approach

A meaningful session should respect your pace, boundaries and lived experience. You remain free to ask questions, pause, decline an exercise or disagree with an interpretation.

What Family Constellation is—and is not

  • It may offer

It should not be presented as

  • A reflective way to explore family roles and relationship patterns.

Proof of hidden family events, ancestral secrets or another person's feelings.

  • New perspectives you can consider at your own pace.

A guaranteed cure or a substitute for appropriate medical or mental-health care.

  • A conversation about boundaries, belonging, responsibility and choice.

A reason to blame, shame, pressure or force reconciliation with anyone.
